Your Two Cents: Have You Committed Financial Infidelity?

Financial infidelity is committed when you intentionally hide your spending from your husband because you're afraid of what he'll say about it. Have you paid cash for items that you didn't want to appear on your joint credit card bill? Or maybe you've slyly disposed of shopping bags or receipts?

If you've agreed to combine finances with your husband, then chances are your tactics won't go forever unnoticed. Sure, it's great to treat yourself once in a while, but it's best to be honest about it to avoid any money arguments pitted around your lie.

It doesn't count if what you're hiding is a surprise gift for him, right? Eye-wink

I've helped my mom ... does that count? My mom would go shopping with us using what is "her" money from her salary and tell us not to mention how much specific things cost to my dad. He knows that she spends money on us but I don't think he knows how much sometimes.

I've snuck home from work purposely a few minutes before I knew he'd be back so I can get packages (online shopping!) in the door before he knows what I've ordered!
I don't call this infidelity though because we haven't merged our finances yet and we don't have a joint budget (we will once we are married, of course) and I don't feel guilty treating myself a bit now before I marry him and his $200K medical school debt and have to help him pay it off!

Every time I buy something, I keep the bag in my car and stuff whatever I bought into my purse. OOPS!

Never. I don't even know how I could if I wanted to! I'm always so excited to show him what I got!

Yes, I've had to hide a few things from him like helping out my mom financially, getting stuff from SEPHORA and sponsoring a little girl from Mexico. Is that so bad? Eye-wink

I've hidden things from his, but usually not on purpose. Like if I stopped somewhere on the way home and picked up a little something extra. But if he asked, I'd tell him.

    And it's never anything expensive.

it's not that i hide it, but i don't lie about it. if i buy a new pair of shoes and he asks, oh are those new? i reply, yes, aren't they cute?

I have issues when he asks how much something costs. i really don't think it's anyone's business. as long as we are saving money, paying our bills, and arent in debt, i should be able to buy a few new things every once in a while and it should be fine.

My b/f is aware that I can be quite the spender and he makes fun of me, but he shouldn't talk because I still manage to save money too!

We don't have any shared accounts, but I do definitely hide some purchases. He hates my shoe habit, so I hide new pairs under a table or leave them at work.
