Would You Eat Bone Marrow?

I recently went out to dinner and found an intriguing dish on the appetizer menu: bone marrow served with little toasts. A long, skinny spoon is used to scoop the marrow out of the bone. It can be spread on the toast, or eaten alone. The flavor is surprisingly delicious and rich. It's a bit oily, but the texture is smooth. Similar to paté's flavor palate (only not so livery), bone marrow is a rare treat that I highly recommend. What do you think, could you eat bone marrow?

Sure I'd try it! I've tried a lot of stuff. I think I'd rather try it and then be told what it was though, instead of seeing it first.

PUKE. I was actually giving my dog a bone like that this week and after cooking it, I was looking inside at the gelatinous looking marrow and was so grossed out. I remember saying 'How in the world does my dog find that appetizing?!'

Actually, it just looks gross but it tastes really good. It's even more delicious if you eat with a tender piece of beef!

Whose bone marrow is this? Cow? Lamb? I'm vegan so no idea which creature this one comes from - just curious!

Okay, in the olden days when I grew up - round steaks used to come with a bone with marrow and my dad and I used to fight over who got it - don't knock it till you've tried it.

It's amazingly rich, and I usually can't eat a whole helping. But it really is deliciously flavorful. I know that the gelatinous texture puts some people off, but you're not supposed to spoon it directly out of the bone and into your mouth (though you can). I find it works best on a toast point of some kind, to counterbalance both the fatty richness and the texture. Kind of like steak tartare.

I'm veggie, so no way. But even if I wasn't, I couldn't do it. I used to assist w/ bone marrow biopsies at my old job, so no thanks!!!

I rarely say this however just the thought of that makes me want to throw-up. I find that to be just as disgusting and cruel to animals as sweet bread aka cow's tongue and pig's feet. My opinion of people changes when I find out they would eat these foods (or animal body parts to be exact.)

I am not saying my eatting habits are sin-free however I could never digest Bone Marrow. I cannot be classified as vegetarian; I eat chicken, some cheese, ice cream now & then and some other products. However I DO NOT: eat red meat, pork, rarely eat turkey and I do not drink milk. I hate steak with a passion.

It's not like fois gras where they force feed geese. shrug I'd try it. I have a couple friends who love it. One is even a bone snapper when she eats chicken.

Eating most any meat is cruel, really. It doesn't matter what part you eat. It's not like they rip the bones out of a still-living animal.

I had some that came with my room service and I tried it and it was alright then out of the blue I found myself scraping the inside of the bone with a knife getting all the marrow and eating it off the knife. It has a weird texture but is good.

In Singapore, there's a much less refined version called "Soup Tulang" which is basically bone marrow beef/mutton soup. It looks a bit scary because of its reddish colour (due to it being stewed in a spicy red chilli) but its pretty good! Quite an experience to eat.

I love bone marrow! When my mom makes meat curries I always fight with my siblings over who gets the marrow. Part of it is how fun it is to suck the marrow out of the bones.

leeluvfashion, sweetbreads are actually the thymus glands, not the tongue. Classifying meat eaters as "sinners" also seems judgmental and out of place in this discussion.

As for the topic, I love bone marrow. It's very rich, but very good!

and on the same note a designergirl would it not be more cruel to only eat certain parts of the animals instead of enjoying the WHOLE animal and nothing going to waste.

On the marrow note my family fights over it but my mom always wins because she gave birth to us!!!

I'm pretty sure the broth that the traditional Vietnamese soup (Pho) I've grown up on is made with bone marrow.

I don't think I'd eat the marrow straight out of the bone, but the soup is super awesome and yummy.

I'm a vegetarian, but even in my meat-eating days, this would be too out there for me. It just doesn't look or sound appetizing -- something gelatinous coming from the inside of a bone???

A month ago I would have said 'NO!' After reading Nasty Bits by Anthony Bourdain, I am inclined to say "sure, I'll try it!"

All the stories of his travels and amazing food have inspired me to be open to anything... life's too short!

Also, I've heard it's really delicious.

    It's delish!

But very rich-tasting. I could only eat one of the three pieces I was served at dinner a few months back.

Glad someone cleared up the sweet breads issue. I've never had the opportunity to have this but I'd love to. I love my veggies but I'm no vegan! Holy cow and I mean that is the most loving fashion.
