Culture Vulture: Would You Watch Opera on the Internet?

You no longer have to be in NYC to get a dose of the Met: The famed opera house is going to start streaming its opera performances online! You'll be able to get audio and video via its "Met Player" from metopera.org.

While I think this is completely cool — I want all important forms of culture to be widely available on the web — I'm kind of curious about the audience rift. That is, are people who are into opera also tech buffs who watch streamed content on the Internet?

But then again, who's not into the Internet?! Share your thoughts on this below!

I would LOVE to see the Opera live, but, tickets are kind of pricey, so this is great! I'm into opera and I'm a tech buff!

opera is dramatic and you definitely need to be in the audience for it. otherwise, it's not as intense. but you can definitely get introduced to certain operas online to see if you want to shell out the bucks to go see it live.

I was never into opera until I actually went to one live, but I still don't like listening to recordings or watching performances on tv. Something about the live performance has a magic that nothing else has captured yet.

I've already watched opera clips on the net. I would watch it streaming.

Live is better, but hey, this way I don't have to dry clean anything and I can sip wine in my underroos.

I haven't had a lot of luck with live streaming over the internet, so I probably won't watch it this way. But I have gone to a couple of the HD broadcasts in the theatre, and those are very good. But best is live, of course! Now if only they'd do this for ballet ...

No way! Watching opera on the Internet is like reading Shakespeare on a computer screen. It's just not the same.

I think I might actually enjoy an opera better online! I've been to a few live and it was just too much. Not enough happened in the three plus hours we spent at each performance to make it really worth my time. But if it were online and I could divert my attention elsewhere, paying the opera sporadic attention.... well, that might be better for us all.

no - i probably wouldn't watch it on the internet. i have enough of an inner debate about watching TV shows and movies online that to bring opera into the mix, when i don't care for it as much live even is beyond me.
