BYU Yanks Degree From Men on a Mission Calendar Maker

Ding-dong! And that's in the metaphorical and literal sense, I suppose. A whole calendar of Mormon missionaries shirtless? Yes — though the hotness of the bell-ringing men depicted has landed its creator in some hot water with his alma mater, Brigham Young University.

Chad Hardy graduated from BYU and created the calendar called "Men on a Mission" aimed at shaking up the boring or cookie-cutter stereotype of the LDS lads. After selling more than 11,000 copies featuring the missionaries in shirtless beefcake poses, last month Hardy received a letter saying that there had been a nonacademic hold placed on his degree. He'd been excommunicated from the church, and that "If in the future you are reinstated as a member of the church in good standing, you are invited to contact my office regarding your possible eligibility for the awarding of a degree." He plans to fight the decision "tooth and nail."

Reasons for the excommunication include the calendar as well as failure to pay tithing and other religious obligations. The 2009 version is on sale now. The controversy is all well and good, but want to see the missionaries sans shirts? Then without further ado, read more.

Is it wrong that I like the shirtless pictures wayyyyy better? ahaahahha It's like extreme sexy makeover! Come on the guy should have known better religion isn't free of arbitrary rules, he should have known there was going to be back lash from the Mormon church. Them withholding his degree is wrong though I mean if they feel they want to kick him out of the church that's one thing but to deny him his degree ( yes I know it's technically associated with the church) is not right and they should know that being "vengeful" isn't the way.

Wait if he would have gave the Church a cut of his "sin" they probably wouldn't have kicked him to the curb, there is something very wrong with this!

Why can't we see the Women of the LDS like this?

I have a hard time with the decision of BYU. If he earned that degree, it should be his. I agree with the excommunication part though. What was he thinking? (don't answer that)

Viewing these men as sexy symbols is wrong. We should all be ashamed. There should really be an option to make the images just a little larger. Laughing out loud

This gave me flashbacks to the super hot Mormon missionaries the lived next door to me in college. My roommate and I were OBSESSED with them. They hung out with these 2 girls who were always over, sitting on lawn chairs outside the front door... I don't think we had a shot with them though because they'd come home and see us smoking our ultra lights on the front steps of the building, but man I would have liked to corrupt them.

I agree bella. There definitely should be an option to make the images larger. It would make it easier to see the sin.

Haha, OK, I may be the only woman who doesn't really get the whole 'beefcake' thing. Eye-wink But, hey, kudos to these guys for all of that...um...Mormon-ing that gave them such great abs. Eye-wink

..."man I would have liked to corrupt them."

...and THIS mentality is why I can always, always bank on my Catholic schoolgirl past. Eye-wink Hey, it was worth something, right?

    haus you crack me up.

I do not think they should revoke his degree. That is insane. The church can do what it wants though I guess.

In any case, all this publicity might sell more calendars.

My my. All that riding around on bikes does a body good!

Revoking the degree is a little crazy, but I can see how the university/church would not be thrilled with this.

However! I do find it interesting that every guy is white.

I know that LDS wasn't very friendly to African Americans for a long time, but thats all fixed now and I thought I read somewhere that the black population in the church was growing?? Puzzled

"something about shirtless male virgins creeps me out..."

What about the flip side? Shirtless female virgins...would that creep a guy out? I thin it'd be the opposite, for the most part.

Ah, well that's what happens when society values female virginity over male virginity. Eye-wink

...but I don't want this post to get all serious. I like reading the innuendo y'all are coming up with.

BYU like many uber religious schools makes you sign code of conduct type rules when you start. Everything is laid out as well as the punishment. I think it is stupid, but their right as a private institution. And the Mormon church is very different than others. I grew up with two of my best friends being Mormon and would visit their church every now and then. It was very different. One of them was disowned by her family when she married outside the church. She did it at 18 and I swear it was just to leave the house. The marriage lasted a little over a year. It really is sad.
