Update: California Voters Pass Gay Marriage Ban

After a morning of uncertainty it has been confirmed that California has passed Prop 8, which would change the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

The ban had 5,125,752 votes, or 52 percent, while there were 4,725,313 votes, or 48 percent, opposed.

California legalized gay marriage earlier this year, but the constitutional amendment will limit marriage to heterosexual couples. Similar bans have been set in 27 states, but none of those states had previously legalized marriage. Update: Opponents have already filed suit in an attempt to stop the measure from taking effect.

So sad..such a step backwards. Fear of the unknown and scaring people into voting with "the slippery slope to incest, and polygammy and child brides" apparnetly works.

And for the god argument...if God in his almighty power didn't want/approve/intended there be homosexuals..why the hell did he create them (there have been scientific proof of gay monkeys, dogs, and animals..not socialization argument there)? He/she loves you just for the way you are...regardless of sexual orientation.

thats really upsetting. i just dont understand what people think will happen if gay people are allowed to get married, do they think the sky is going to fall down or something? they arent hurting anyone with getting married to the person they love most. its just crazy........

I too, am ashamed of my state. I thought CA was the best state in the country, instead I live in a state where bigotry and hatred can pass stupid laws! Love is love!

"And for the god argument...if God in his almighty power didn't want/approve/intended there be homosexuals..why the hell did he create them"

didn't you know CYL...gay people CHOOSE to be gay...they're not born with it..at least that's what every one against gay marriage says anyways.

can we please have a separation of church and state (like we are supposed to) and have 2 types of marriage: marriages recognized by churches/etc and civil unions? i am really disgusted that this failed but i guess we have to give CA some credit for legalizing gay marriages at all... that would have never happened in NC.

"i just dont understand what people think will happen if gay people are allowed to get married, do they think the sky is going to fall down or something?"
We keep asking what they think will happen Lacey, but I haven't heard a reasonable answer yet. I think it'll be fought and tossed from court to court and eventually, we will end up amending the Constitution because there will have to be a definitive answer. People can't be married in one state and not another.

I don't get it. There had to have been a bunch of so-called liberals to vote for this. If you talk the talk you should walk the walk. I'm a moderate conservative but even I think that gay people should be able to marry. AND adopt!

Lol aka Daria. I guess we will all burn in hell for voting a 'Muslim' President in (still can't believe people buy it) and because we are pro Gay marraige. At least it will be warm and toasty.

And as I said on the other post...in the great words of the Canadian Prime Minister (Canadian version of the President)... "The state has no place in the bedrooms of the nation"

I agree with Lacy, people really must think something bad is going to happen if they let gay people get married but news flash nothing bad is going to happen, they aren't going to hurt anyone, it's not going to raise taxes, etc....

If they would pull their heads out of their butts they would actually see that.

This is definitely a sad day hopefully all the supporters for no on 8 will continue to fight and next election maybe will will have another chance to say no and it will stick.

SAD!!! In my own little bubble, i barely saw or heard anyone who supported 8. I saw a little support last weekend on some street corners but that's it.

All I can say is, my county and those surrounding it WERE NOT the reason it passed.... we tried, we did our best.

A sad day for human rights, indeed.

"i just dont understand what people think will happen if gay people are allowed to get married, do they think the sky is going to fall down or something?"

I don't get it either. It's not like the state will come into your home and make you marry a gay person.

How are these people able to look their children, friends, & relatives in their eyes and say "you don't deserve the same rights as I do because you are gay"??????

Prop 8 was about HATE and discrimination.

I've been following your election/prop 8 with some interest (I'm in the UK). Just out of interest - where does this leave people who married between it becoming legal/illegal - are they now not recognised as married by the state?

The Economist highlights research revealing that homosexuality amongst men and women actually plays a subtle role in conferring higher procreation success amongst their relatives v. families with no homosexual members.

The religious zealots have no clues when it comes to subtlety of God's nature.

It's amazing how Christians have sucha capacity for hate, when our god and his son clearly preach something else, leave the judging up to God. I'd like to think that on judgement he will judge us based on how handled ourselves and affected the world around rather than who we loved.

yeah this is really upsetting to me and all of the couples I know whose lives are now in limbo... I guess we'll see what happens when it's challenged in court. however, I'm not all that surprised that it passed-- democrats in CA are not all "liberal" on all issues-- minority populations voted heavily for this measure as they were predicted to.

I will repeat what I said before not so subtleheights:

A)The Economist highlights research revealing that homosexuality amongst men and women actually plays a subtle role in conferring higher procreation success amongst their relatives v. families with no homosexual members.

The religious zealots have no clues when it comes to subtlety of God's nature.

    And B)
You have a lot of hate for people....but God's first thing is all about the love...so sad about the going to hell part...because you will probably be there before anyone else with your hate...and intolerance.

oh please subtleheights, what a weak, weak argument. And how offensive are you? You are the perfect example to use when citing how hypocritical Christians are, shouldn't you be a pro-life rally somewhere or attendign a bible bashing church service. I am so embarrassed to for you right now
