Living it up with your closest friends one last time before taking the trip down the aisle is a big part of getting married. Most brides and grooms plan their bachelor/bachelorette parties months in advance, and they're usually events that are talked about years later. While it's customary to have single sex soirees, some couples — Fergie and Josh for example who partied it up together last night in LA — opt to have a joint bachelor/bachelorette party. I've never been to one myself, but I think it'd be a blast to join forces like that — the more the merrier! Since the choice is yours, tell me . . . Flynet

Dear Sugar,

My long-time boyfriend’s only sister is getting married next year and she asked me to be her maid of honor. I’m absolutely thrilled and honored to be so involved with her wedding, as she’s an amazing woman. That being said, we are friendly, but we’re not best friends. In general, the bride-to-be doesn’t have any close friends outside of her family because she and her fiancé live a pretty isolated lifestyle — I think she asked me because she didn't have anyone else to ask.

This puts me in a really weird position when it comes to planning pre-wedding activities because the bride-to-be isn’t the party type. I want this genuinely sweet woman to have an amazing time celebrating her last days as a single girl but I have no idea what to plan for her bachelorette party. When browsing the party supply store for bachelorette party decorations, I came across nothing but tacky, raunchy, over the top accessories. However with a little ingenuity, an elegant and sophisticated look can be created at your bachelorette party. A purple, gray, and snake print theme is fabulous fun.

Place a gray placemat on a side table and have guests leave their presents there. Set the snacks and pecker cookies on snake print serving plates. Chill the Champagne in a faux snakeskin wine cooler and line flutes next to the cooler. Dim the lights and put candles in purple glass votives. Drape gray feather boas over the beds and dressers and arrange purple flowers in glass vases.

Purchase festive paper cocktail napkins with a bachelorette trivia game print. To keep the snake theme going with the party favors, give each guest a lip venom lip gloss. For more wedding ideas, check out IDoSugar.

Having a fabulous selection of alcoholic beverages at your bachelorette party is as important as having delicious food. Drinks will help unacquainted guests mingle more freely and will allow the entire group to loosen up.

For Elena's lingerie shower in my Vegas hotel room, I'll have an unlimited supply of her favorite Champagne, Sofia Blanc de Blancs. Come Party With Me: Bachelorette — Dessert

Although most of a bachelorette party in Vegas will be spent living it up in the casinos, bars, restaurants, and nightclubs, I'm hosting a small lingerie shower for Elena in my hotel room. Along with some simple snacks, I'll serve sugar cookies.

However, these cookies won't be round like in the picture: I'm making them festive by using pecker cookie cutters!

Party Foul: Coming Empty Handed

Recently I attended a friend's destination bachelorette party. I was having a lovely time until one of the organizers asked everyone to get their present. I looked around panic stricken and wondered how I didn't know about this special surprise. Apparently, a group of the girls decided to get flashy presents — lingerie, boas, sunglasses — for the bride to wear on our big night out. I loved the idea, but wondered why we weren't all included?

Giving out details to select guests or informing only a group of guests that gifts are expected is not cool. Not only does it make the hostess look bad — why have a party if you're not going to include everyone in the fun? — but it's rude and will leave guests feeling uncomfortable and out of place.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Please share your bachelorette horror stories below!

When hosting a destination bachelorette party in a glamorous location like Vegas, set aside plenty of time to plan the party. Being organized with a schedule of events, set dinner reservations, and selected club locations will aid in making the event fabulously seamless. Let guests know what's up in advance, so they can pack appropriate clothing.

For my friend Elena's bachelorette party in Las Vegas, all of the meals will be eaten out. However, one of the nights before we go out, everyone will gather in my room for a lingerie shower. I've ordered a trio of appetizers — white bean hummus with kalamata relish, Bloody Mary cocktail meatballs, and spinach gruyere pinwheels — from the hotel, so everyone can sip Champagne and have a snack.
