
When we're trying to get a handle on our finances, giving money away doesn't even seem like a viable option. However, for most organizations, a small donation makes a difference. UC Berkeley and Craigslist joined forces to create a research-based website, called
Donation Dashboard, that helps you choose charities in line with both your interests and your budget.

The queen of 30-minute meals, Rachael Ray, is an expert on whipping up family meals, and in her life outside the kitchen she loves to share more than just food with her own family. When
Bankrate asked her if she treats herself to many extravagances, Ray said that now she's able to take her entire family on an annual Italian vacation and she enjoys doing things that are "emotionally profitable," like starting the Yum-O! organization.

As part of the annual "Les Sapins de Noël des Créateurs" charity auction to benefit the Sol En Si charity organization, which helps children and families living with AIDS in Paris, last week the fashion elite gathered
to bid on 44 Christmas trees designed by some of the most prominent names in fashion.

Clothes might be their forte, but that won't stop fashion designers from trying their hands at designing Christmas trees for charity. The results — as you see from Louis Vuitton's golden delight below — were fabulous. The Christmas trees, which included designs from Zaha Hadid, Louis Vuitton, Miguel Adrover, and Jean Paul Gaultier, went up for auction at Paris's architecture museum last week.

As much as we try to avoid it, last-minute shopping inevitably seems to be a part of every
holiday season. This year, do yourself a favor: Ditch the stressful, crowded mall, and shop online instead.

In these strange economic times, it's even more important than ever to support nonprofits and charities that are working to preserve people's homes and healthy living spaces. With that in mind, I've chosen some of my favorite charities that work with gardens or housing issues. I can't emphasize the importance of these programs enough.

This year, there are more organizations in need of help and less people who have money to spare; this formula does not bode well for charities or the people who rely on them. The misconception that it takes deep pockets to give to charity scares away some potential givers. The truth is, any amount counts and is appreciated.
